This post is not a rant.  Nor is it a complaint about new clients.  Far from it.  We love all of our clients, new and old.

It is a post to dispell some of the common myths about what a website is and what it isn’t.

What a website ISN’T, is a lot of things.  But here’s a few of the common misconceptions I see in daily discussion with new and old clients.

A website ISN’T your home.  It’s your home on the web.  Maybe.  But it isn’t really your home.  We do not need to fill it full of expensive furniture and knick knacks.  We need it to make money.  Knick Knacks get in the way and get broken from time to time.  There’s no place for them on your webpage unless they make you money.

A website IS NOT your showpiece.  I hear it all the time.  “the first is for show, the rest are for dough”.  Why not make them all for dough and forget the show.  It’s a business.  Let’s make some money.

A website is not just something to show your friends and brag.  Once again.  There’s nothing to brag about if it’s a loser and makes no money.  Brag when you can call them from your new yacht, paid for completely with money you made online.

A website is not any different then a real bricks and mortar business.  Running any business requires overhead.  Rent, Electricity, Phone, etc.  There is little difference with your online business.  You must pay for good hosting, a phone, a credit card processor, domain registration, design, continued growth, and good content that’s continually added to the site to make it authoritative.

A website IS only one thing folks.

It’s an AD.

Yup.  That simple.  It’s an advertisement.  An advertisement for your business, product, or affiliate that you are promoting.  It’s sole purpose in this world is to make you money.  If it does not, or currently is not, then it’s time to consider a different revenue strategy.
