Google Hacks and the newbie webmaster
June 30th, 2007
Over on my forum I posted a big list of the most used Google Hacks, which you can see here:
List of hackers favorite Google Hack’s and search phrases
At either rate, the main reason I listed it was not to attract a bunch of script kiddies, but to help newbie webmasters when they in the construction phase of their sites.
Because for the most part, almost none of them know what their permissions should be for their files or how to protect thier folders.
So let’s start with the latter, which is the most important, and the easiest.
Protecting your folders.
Simply build yourself an empty html page, name it ‘index.html’ and stick a copy of it in every single folder that does not have one. This will keep people from bringing up the file trees of your folders and viewing (and downloading) your content where they are not supposed to.
Just make a quickie file like this:
<html><head><title>No Access</title>
<head>
<body>
<center> </center>
</body>
</html>
Just that simple…. Now if you really want to get fancy, put up an affiliate banner there, or better yet, if it’s some really super secret folder that they shouldnt even know about unless they are just trying to be hateful, load em’ up with about two hundred popups/popunders…..
Just be sure to remember and not open it yourself sometime…
You could also just as easily make a quick redirect back to the index page. Next time we’ll talk a bit about htaccess in this regard.
